Financial Literacy Ending the Cycle of Debt
Is personal debt hereditary? Are there bad credit genes? While we may not have inherited our credit DNA from our parents, we have learned by their example, for better or worse. Though Canadian schools have always taught the 3 R’s, Readin’ Ritin’ and Rhithmatic’, the last 30 years has seen a drastic drop in another, equally important, part of the curriculum…. Financial Literacy.
Since 2005 4 Pillars Debt Solutions has been an integral part of developing Financial Literacy in Canada. In the beginning 4 Pillars worked with the City of Edmonton to create a new platform of financial literacy tools. Tools designed to help both social workers and non-profit organizations assist and educate low income families.
Back to School
EmpowerU is the brain child of 4 Pillar’s Troy Tisserand and the City of Edmonton’s Heather Morrison. This $5 million 5 Year program is currently funded by , ATB, EPCOR, The Stollery Foundation, the City of Edmonton, the United Way of Edmonton, the Government of Alberta, and 4 Pillars Consulting Group. EmpowerU has proven there is a direct link between well-chosen Financial Literacy programs and the financial education of Canadians. The result, consumers who are more confident about money, better able to build their savings, and in the end create a better future for themselves and their families. 4 Pillars is directly involved in helping develop the learning materials and facilitating support for these organizations.
The EmpowerU program is run by volunteers all working to deliver financial literacy on a scale never before through its partnership with corporations, municipal and provincial governments, support agencies, and of course the 11 non-profit organizations that deliver the program.
Graduation Day
This initiative has since grown to the national level and 4 Pillars is now an active member of the National Steering Committee on Financial Literacy. Their goal: to promote the need for Financial Literacy.
