Debt & Math: Something Doesn’t Add Up

By Benjy Houser

Debt & Math: Something Doesn’t Add Up

There are two kinds of people in the world. People who love math; who can calculate complex equations and formulas in their heads, who actually enjoy the challenge of solving a mathematical problem and will gladly tell you how they figured out that X was the square root of 72 divided by 9.3.  And then there’s the rest of us.  We’re the ones who break out in a cold sweat trying to figure out how much to tip.  We’re comfortable with basic adding and subtracting, the lower multiplication tables and simple division.  We’ve even mastered small fractions; ¼, ½ basically if it’s on a measuring cup we’re cool with it. But tell us there’s a train leaving the station heading west at 53 km an hour and ask us what time it arrives at its destination, chances are we’ll throw our hands up in frustration and just book an airline ticket instead.

1 + 1 = 3?

When you’re living with debt you’re forced to deal with the one thing you dread most… numbers.  You’d think it would be simple math.  Income – Bills = Cash for the rest of the week/month.  But what happens when your bills exceeds your income?  What happens when those numbers don’t add up?  If you think calculating a 15% tip is nerve wracking try figuring out interest rates, added fees, and minimum payments.  And if you get that far in your math, brace yourself for the realization that your minimum payment barely covers your monthly interest without making a dent in the principle you owe your creditors.  BOOM!!!  That’s the sound of your head exploding.

The Numbers Dance

If there’s one upside to debt, it makes you creative with numbers.  You become a finely tuned computer who knows exactly how much you need to pay to keep your creditors at bay and still have enough income left to cover food, gas, and lodging.  Sure there are some months you have to short Peter to pay Paul, but if you make it through thru the month without one creditor call or a disconnection notice, you count that as a win.

The problem with the numbers dance and debt in general is that it’s not only your toes getting stomped on.  Debt = Stress + Fear.  Stress contributes to depression, exhaustion, poor performance at work (Stress x 2), breakdown of relationships, and overall hopelessness (+ 50% more Fear).  So, is there a formula that will put an end to the numbers dance once and for all?
