From the West Side and the North Side to Coaldale, Taber, Raymond and Picture Butte, southern Alberta families have faced higher prices on almost everything. When the bills, the truck payment and the credit cards no longer fit the paycheque, 4 Pillars helps Lethbridge-area residents understand every option and choose a plan that fits.

Many of the people we hear from in Lethbridge work in agriculture and food processing, health care, education, trades or retail, often with a household income that hasn’t kept up with costs. Others are students at the University of Lethbridge or Lethbridge College who leaned on credit to get through school. We start with your real numbers, then explain which options fit, from a tighter budget and money coaching and a debt management plan to a formal solution through a Licensed Insolvency Trustee. According to the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy, the Lethbridge–Medicine Hat economic region recorded 1,247 consumer insolvencies in 2025, down 2% from 2024. About 86% of them (1,078) were consumer proposals, and 169 were bankruptcies.
If you have dependable income but your unsecured debts have grown past what you can repay in full, a consumer proposal is usually the first formal option to compare. It’s an offer to your creditors to repay part of what you owe over up to five years, and you generally keep your assets. Only a Licensed Insolvency Trustee can file it, and your creditors vote on it. 4 Pillars is not a trustee. We help you prepare and connect you with one. How a consumer proposal works.
Bankruptcy is more likely to fit when income is low or uncertain and there’s little in the way of assets. Only a Licensed Insolvency Trustee can file it, and Alberta’s exemption rules decide what you keep, such as basic household goods and, up to a limit, a vehicle. We’ll explain what it would mean for you before you meet a trustee. Learn about bankruptcy.
If your credit is still in good shape, a consolidation loan can roll several payments into one. Homeowners are sometimes offered a refinance, but that moves unsecured debt onto your home and doesn’t reduce what you owe. Compare options for homeowners first. Once your debt is under control, we help with credit rebuilding.

Personal income tax debt is generally an unsecured debt, so it can usually be included in a consumer proposal or bankruptcy. CRA votes on a proposal like any other creditor. Your tax returns need to be up to date, and a trustee will confirm the details.
In Alberta, businesses that arrange debt repayment programs need a provincial licence. Licensed Insolvency Trustees are licensed federally and are the only ones who can file consumer proposals and bankruptcies. Ask any company you’re considering which licences it holds.
