My name is Benjy Houser and I’m the owner of a local 4 Pillars office operating in Victoria BC.
I am truly passionate about helping people and/or businesses improve their financial lives by helping reduce debt, increase cash flow and helping people protect their assets. Nothing gives me greater joy in business than seeing people’s lives very much improved by this process of debt consolidation and restructuring.
4 Pillars Vancouver Island feature discussing why they love to assist consumers struggling with debt.
Whether you live in James Bay, Fernwood or Oak Bay, out in Saanich, Esquimalt or View Royal, or on the Westshore in Langford, Colwood and Sooke, life in Greater Victoria isn’t cheap. High rents and home prices, the commute into town and the cost of living on an island add up. I work with public servants, navy and Department of National Defence families, UVic and Camosun students, people working in tourism and hospitality, and retirees on fixed incomes. I start with your real numbers, then explain which options fit, from a tighter budget and money coaching and a debt management plan to a formal solution through a Licensed Insolvency Trustee. See all of our services.
If you can manage a regular payment but not your full unsecured balances, a consumer proposal lets you offer creditors part of what you owe over up to five years, with no interest, and you generally keep your assets. Only a Licensed Insolvency Trustee can file it, and your creditors vote on it. 4 Pillars is not a trustee. I’ll help you prepare and connect you with one. How a consumer proposal works.
Bankruptcy may make more sense if your income is limited and you have few assets. Only a Licensed Insolvency Trustee can file it, and B.C. law decides which assets you keep. I’ll explain what it would mean for you before you meet a trustee. Learn about bankruptcy.
A consolidation loan can combine several payments into one if your credit is still good, but it doesn’t reduce what you owe. Refinancing your home moves unsecured debt onto your property, so compare options for homeowners first. Once your debt is under control, I’ll help with credit rebuilding.

Yes. Secured debts like your mortgage or car loan aren’t reduced. Certain other debts generally survive a proposal or bankruptcy, including child or spousal support, court-ordered fines, and government student loans if you left school less than seven years ago. A trustee will confirm which of your debts can be included.
